Now in its fifth year, DIVA Summer Songwriting Camp, a program of The Overture Institute, offers young women (ages 10-16) the opportunity to be immersed in music and songwriting, surrounded by some of the country’s most influential professional musicians. Each band will work together for one week to create two original songs with their new friends. On Friday, June 26 at 7PM, the bands will debut their songs on state at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. All are welcome to this spectacular celebration of songwriting and creativity!
Sierra Noble, one of the camp guitar and songwriting instructors, wrote, “This week I am teaching guitar and songwriting at the DIVA Summer Songwriting Camp in Indianapolis, IN with Ron Browning, Amy Speace, Telisha Williams, and other great local Indy artists/teachers. We are day 2 of the camp and I am so blown away! The talent and inspiration and soul that is pouring out of this group of 35 girls ages 10-14 is literally unbelievable. I have the honor of working closely with 4 of the girls in a band situation and we starting to write their first of two songs today…and no exaggeration, it could be a hit! I can’t explain how inspired – almost RE-inspired – I am as an artist by these young girls.”
Amy Speace and Ron Browning are joining the staff this year as Resident Songwriting Coaches. Amy Speace has written songs that have been recorded by Judy Collins, the late Memphis blues artist Sid Selvidge, Red Molly and others. Her song “The Weight of the World”, which Judy Collins has called “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard” was named as the #4 Folk Song of the Decade by NYC’s premiere AAA radio station WFUV. She has toured and shared the stage with Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Ian Hunter, Alejandro Escovedo. Ron Browning is a world-wide, sought-after Voice & Songwriting Coach to the Stars based inNashville, Tennessee. He works with singers and songwriters from beginners to celebrities in all genres of music and performance. Just a few of Ron’s voice clients include Carrie Underwood (NBC’s The Sound of Music LIVE), Wynonna, Alison Krauss, Patti LaBelle, Keb Mo, and the three new Stars on the Horizon, RaeLynn, Chris Lane, and Allen Stone.
