The International League has named Indianapolis Indians right-hander Angel Sanchez as Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 29 – July 5. The Triple-A rookie went 2-0 en route to the first IL accolade of his career and the Tribe’s third Pitcher of the Week award through 12 weeks of the 2015 season (also Adrian Sampson twice).
Sanchez, 25, won each of his two starts to help lead the Indians past IL West division rivals Columbus (June 30) and Louisville (July 5). He pitched seven innings during both outings, highlighted by a career high-tying nine-strikeout effort against the Clippers, and concluded the week with a 0.64 ERA (1 ER in 14.0 IP), a league-leading 16 strikeouts and just two walks.
Overall this season, Sanchez is 11-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 70 strikeouts over 17 Minor League starts between the Indians and Double-A Altoona. He enters today’s action tied for the most wins in all of Minor League Baseball (four players), and only Jacob Faria of Double-A Montgomery has matched his MiLB-best record of 11 wins with just one loss.
