On July 20, 2015 at approximately 8:18 p.m., an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department initiated a traffic stop near the 3300 block of North Sherman Drive after observing a traffic infraction. The vehicle turned eastbound onto East 33rd Street and stopped just east of Sherman Drive. At that time, the front seat passenger stepped out of the vehicle with a handgun in his hand. After giving loud verbal commands to drop the weapon, the officer fired one shot at the armed subject. At this time, that shot is not believed to have struck the armed subject. The subject fled northbound on foot from the scene with a gun still in hand. A perimeter was quickly established and an active search for the armed individual ensued.
Two individuals, still inside the vehicle (driver and back-seat passenger), were detained for questioning at the scene without incident. After an active search in the area for the armed suspect, with the assistance of a K-9 unit, the subject was not located. With the help of citizens in the area, officers were able to recover two weapons within the established perimeter possibly belonging to the fleeing suspect. At this time, the search for the suspect has been suspended with the subject still at large. The suspect was described as a light-skinned, black male, with long hair (possibly dreads), wearing no shirt and khaki shorts. That individual should still be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact police immediately.
This is an active, on-going investigation; detectives and Crime Lab personnel are processing the scene and interviewing witnesses. At this time, detectives with IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T) have responded to the scene and have begun a criminal investigation into the incident. Investigators with IMPD Internal Affairs are also on scene to conduct a separate administrative investigation to determine compliance with department policy. This advisory may be updated once additional information is made available for release. No officers were injured during this incident.
