On July 7, 2015 at 7:30 PM at Andrews Academy, 4000 E. 38th Street, Commander Chris Bailey, FOP Lodge 86 President Rick Snyder and the family of Fallen Officer Perry Renn will memorialize Officer Renn’s service to the community by the placement of a legacy plaque near where he fell one year ago.
On July 5, 2014, at approximately 9:24 p.m., Officer Perry W. Renn, 51, and Officer Nicholas Gallico responded to an anonymous 911 call to report shots fired near the intersection of East 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue. Upon arrival, Officers Renn and Gallico encountered an armed subject in an alley nearby. As the officers approached a small group of people in a yard near the intersection, a woman called to the officers everything was okay.
When Officers Gallico and Renn moved in closer, they saw a male subject armed with an assault rifle. Additional back up was called to the scene.
Before backup officers could arrive, the subject fired his assault rifle at Officer Renn, which penetrated his protective vest wounding him mortally. Officer Renn was able to return fire before collapsing.
In keeping with the traditions of the Fallen Officer’s Legacy Project, a plaque will be placed just four blocks from where Officer Renn’s deadly encounter occurred. The plaque will be placed in a short ceremony during a city-wide roll call of Late/Tact Shift Officers at the Andrews Academy, a charter school within the patrol zone that Perry worked since 1993.
Commander Chris Bailey had this to day, “It’s been one year ago, almost to the day, that we lost one of our best. Whether one year, or 100 years, we will not—and we should not—ever forget.”
The Fallen Officer’s Legacy Project is a grass-roots effort to mark the location where every Law Enforcement Officer in Marion County lost his/her life in service to the community. The project was developed by Benjamin Staletovich who coordinated his efforts with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 86, the David S. Moore Foundation and the Indiana Chapter, Concerns of Police Survivors. Since the project’s inception in 2011, over 100 Legacy Plaques have been placed throughout Marion County. The plaques include a photo of the fallen officer and a website managed by FOP 86 that provides details of the incident.
“These plaques are a painful but necessary reminder to our community of the sacrifices that its finest citizens have made and are prepared to make on their behalf.” said Rick Snyder, President of FOP 86.
Perry Renn’s widow, Lynn Renn and members of her family from out-of-state will be at the roll call.
