INDIANAPOLIS – Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Unit are investigating a shooting that killed two men and left a child in serious condition.
On July 2, 2016, at approximately 6:33 p.m., IMPD officers responded in the 2300 block of Magnolia Place on the report of multiple people shot. When officers arrived, they located 3 victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the front yard of a residence. EMS personnel pronounced 32-year-old Justin Sims deceased at the scene. 26-year-old Dangelo Brown was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital and was immediately taken to the operating room due to his critical injuries. Despite the best life-saving measures, Brown succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. A 3-year-old child was taken to Riley Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his hand. He remains in serious but stable condition at this time.
Witnesses told detectives the victims were part of a larger family gathering outside of a residence. The family was celebrating the life of a recently deceased relative, whose funeral was earlier in the day. Detectives believe a lone gunman approached on foot and began shooting into the crowd. After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene on foot. Detectives are working to determine a motive for this targeted shooting.
Detectives urge anyone with information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS (8477) or the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475. Information shared via Crime Stoppers should be considered anonymous and confidential. This release may be updated as more information is known by detectives.
