The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a crash on the city’s southeast side that left a man in critical condition.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Mon., Jan. 23, an IMPD detective exiting 465 South onto Thompson Road noticed a red vehicle stopped in the intersection. The detective was unsure if the driver was impaired or having a medical emergency but before he could get out to check on the driver the vehicle took off.
Concerned the driver was suffering from some sort of medical emergency the detective turned on his lights and sirens and followed him but, instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and led the detective on a short vehicle pursuit. The driver disregarded a stop sign and drove into the intersection of West Thompson and Bluff Road and was hit by a northbound vehicle. Indianapolis EMS responded and transported the driver to Eskenazi in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle was treated and released at the scene.
Due to the critical condition of the man, a blood draw could not be conducted. Detectives will continue their investigation and updated information will be provided as warranted.
