UPDATE: Wednesday, February 15, 2017, 12:53 AM
Through the course of the investigation, including interviews with several juveniles, it appears as though this shooting was accidental. The juveniles initially told responding officers the 16-year-old decedent was shot in the parking lot and ran to the apartment for help. Detectives were able to determine the 17-year-old suspect and decedent were actually horse playing with a handgun inside of the apartment. Detectives allege the 17-year-old accidentally shot his 16-year-old friend in the head.
The 17-year-old juvenile was preliminarily arrested for reckless homicide. The case will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a final charging decision. The decedent’s identity will be released at a later time.
This incident remains under investigation but serves as a tragic reminder that guns in the hands of juveniles have deadly consequences.
