Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrest a 17-year-old juvenile with drugs and confiscate a handgun found in the juvenile suspect’s car.
Investigators received specific intelligence information that two rivalry groups would be at Club Limelight located in the 5100 block of West 38th Street. Officers had a significant fear that two groups might cause a general nuisance to public safety. IMPD District and Covert Operations deployed a reasonable police presence to the area to avoid any potential threats.
As officers were canvassing the parking lot of the club, to deter any possible problems, an alert officer observed in plain view illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia located within the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Another officer could see through the vehicle’s front windshield what he believed to be the butt of a handgun protruding from underneath the driver’s side seat. Officers having observed evidence of a criminal nature, drugs in plain view, decided to wait on the owner of the car to arrive to investigate further. Moments later a large group of people came running out of the club because of a large fight that had erupted inside. It is believed that several of the groups were running to their cars to retrieve guns possibly.
Officers watched the suspect approach the vehicle where officers had viewed the illegal drugs and open the car door. Officers watched the suspect bend down on the driver’s side of which time they made the decision to approach. Officers approached, announced themselves, and without incident took the suspect into custody. Officers later found inside the vehicle a handgun and approximately 25 grams of suspected cocaine. In addition to the drugs found in the car, officers found on the juvenile suspect approximately 18 grams of suspected marijuana.
The juvenile suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of Dealing in Cocaine, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of a Handgun by a Serious Violent Felon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Dealing Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia. The juvenile suspect was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center to be processed, and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the investigative findings of the case and make a charging decision. Because the juvenile suspect has not been charged as an adult his booking photo, or his name are both unavailable at this time.
