As the officer arrived, he observed an active gun battle between two individuals. The officer gave loud verbal commands for the suspects to stop firing, however the gunfire continued. In an effort to preserve life, the officer discharged his service weapon in the direction of the suspects. One suspect fell to the ground and the other fled the scene.
The officer immediately began rendering aid to the suspect who was still on scene. The suspect had been shot in the abdomen and leg. EMS personnel responded and transported the injured suspect to Methodist Hospital in serious condition. It is unknown at this time whether the officer’s rounds struck the suspect or if it was the other shooter who had struck him.
Investigators believe that this shooting is a result of feud amongst individuals who know each other and that it had been going most of the day. It escalated after a possible verbal dispute about clothes and when a brick was allegedly thrown at a car window. It was at that point, investigators believe two individuals pulled firearms and began firing at each other.
Investigators are in the process of taking formal statements from all known witnesses. If additional witnesses exist that have not yet talked with investigators, we urge them to call the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475
