A report of a stolen vehicle led to a drug bust by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on the city’s southeast side Jan. 27. Shortly before 6:30 p.m., a detective went to an apartment in the 3400 block of Carson Avenue after they were informed of the location of a stolen vehicle.
The tenants, 36-year old Kenneth Angel and 29 -year-old Erica Thompson, told the detective they were the only ones home. While talking with the couple at the door of the apartment, the detective smelled a strong odor of marijuana. After entering the apartment, he encountered two more people and then performed a protective sweep of the house.
While going through the apartment, the detective entered a bedroom and saw what he suspected to be a bag of heroin in plain view and called for assistance from Southeast Vice/ Narcotics detectives. A written consent to search the home was signed by Angel and Thompson.
While searching the residence, detectives found drug paraphernalia, digital scales, a ledger, security cameras, $3,761 in cash, and a safe. During the search approximately 10 grams of heroin and six grams of methamphetamine were also found. The safe was transported to the narcotics office and a search warrant was applied for. After the warrant was granted, three handguns and an ounce of methamphetamine were found in the safe.
Angel and Thompson were both arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance, Possession of Paraphernalia, and Dealing a Controlled Substance. They were both transported to the Arrestee Processing Center by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a final charging decision

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Southeast District Detective and Southeast Narcotics detectives team up on investigation that nets dangerous drugs, guns, and two felony arrests.
Just before 6:30 p.m. on January 27th, 2017, A Southeast District detective was in the 3400 block of Carson Avenue trying to locate a stolen vehicle. Using proven investigative techniques, the detective developed information that indicated the occupants of an apartment in the 3400 block of Carson Avenue were in possession of a stolen vehicle. The detective had verified the information and had confirmed that this vehicle was stolen. While the detective was driving by the address he noticed that the stolen vehicle was there.
After confirming that he had the correct vehicle, the detective initiated a knock and talk investigation at the target apartment. After making contact with the occupants, 36-year-old Kenneth Angel and 29-year-old Erica Thompson, the detective gained access to the apartment after smelling a strong odor of marijuana. The detective then performed a protective sweep.
While performing the sweep, the detective entered the bedroom. Once inside, the detective observed a bag containing what he suspected to be heroin in plain view. The detective then requested Southeast District Narcotics to come to the scene. Narcotics detectives responded and obtained a written consent to search from both Angel and Thompson.
Detectives then began a search of the apartment and found the following:
- 10 grams of heroin
- 6 grams of methamphetamine
- Numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia
- $3,761 in cash
Detectives also located a safe and obtained a search warrant to examine its contents. The following items were located inside the safe:
- 3 handguns
- 1 Ounce of methamphetamine
Kenneth Angel and Erica Thompson were arrested and preliminarily charged with dealing narcotics, possession of narcotics, possession of paraphernalia, and maintaining a common nuisance. Angel and Thompson were later transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a final charging decision.
Narcotics and Vice detectives across the city continue to address incoming complaints from the community as well as identify narcotics activity through their own independent investigations.
