A single vehicle crash on the east side of Indianapolis has claimed the life of a 77-year-old Peru man.
Emergency crews were called to a roll-over crash on the ramp from I-465 southbound to I-70 eastbound today at 3:42p.m. Upon arrival responders found the wreckage of a 1999 GMC pick-up truck on its top with two occupants entrapped. Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department worked quickly to extricate and rescue both occupants, unfortunately 77 year old Elijah Hawkins was pronounced deceased on the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, 62 year old Susan Hawkins of Peru, was transported to Eskanazi Hospital with serious injuries. There were also two dogs inside the vehicle that appeared uninjured, they were taken by animal control units.
Investigators believe Mr. Hawkins was driving too fast to safely navigate the curve of the ramp, he ran off the road, overcorrected back across two lanes where he went off the other side and overturned. Both occupants were wearing seat belts and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.
The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Indianapolis Fire Department, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Marion County Coroners’ Office, INDOT, Indianapolis Animal Control and Zores Wrecker Service
