Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) probationary officer on routine patrol identifies suspected vehicle used in a robbery and then initiates an investigation that leads to an arrest of a suspect.
Just after 9:30 a.m. on 04/06/2017, probationary officer Hayden located a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle of an armed business robbery of the Rich Gas Station in the 70 block of N Lynhurst Dr that occurred on 04/05/2017. The suspect vehicle was backed into a parking spot without a license plate and part of the VIN number blocked in the 6000 block of Cheshire Road. Officer Hayden matched the majority of the VIN to the BMV return of the suspect vehicle. Day shift officers sat off the car and apartment while Robbery Detective Sergeant Hendricks was notified of the situation. Officer Hayden observed a white male, who matched the physical description of the suspect, exit the apartment building and then go back inside the building in the 6000 block of Cheshire Road.
Robbery Detective Sergeant Hendricks was able to obtain a search warrant for the apartment and vehicle. Officer Hayden, Second Shift Officers and Robbery Detectives served the warrants without incident and detained the white male suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Brandon Leavitt. Evidence was seized from the residence and Leavitt was transported down to the Robbery Offices. Leavitt was arrested and preliminarily charged with robbery. He was later transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision.
This was excellent work by an attentive probationary officer. Great work by the Robbery detectives and to all who were involved in this coordinated effort after the suspect vehicle was located. This is another testament of the commitment and dedication that officers and detectives of the IMPD have, for serving the community of Indianapolis. The IMPD would like to thank the citizens of Indianapolis for their ongoing support and efforts in helping to make Indianapolis a safer place to live, work, and play!
