TRIBE NOTES
SEE YOU IN MAY, IL WEST: After opening the season with 11 games against IL West foes, the Indians play their next 12 games against opponents outside the division. Indy hosts Durham, an IL South squad, for the next three games. Last year, the Indians went 4-2 against the Bulls, taking two of three at both The Vic and the DBAP. Indy went 18-13 against the IL South last year, the only division they owned a winning record against. Once the Bulls leave town, Indy hosts Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for three games before hitting the road to Pawtucket and Scranton for a six-game roadie. Both of those teams reside in the IL North.
TWO-OUT RBI: In Sunday’s 9-5 loss at Toledo, the Indians scored each of their five runs with two outs. Jose Osuna tallied an RBI double in the first, Gift Ngoepe and Austin Meadows knocked two-out RBI singles in the second inning, and Jason Rogers’ two-run homer in the eighth came with two outs. Prior to that game, the Tribe had totaled just nine two-out RBI through the first 10 games of the season.
HAPPY BELATED, SKIP: First-year manager Andy Barkett celebrated his 44th birthday on the league-wide off day yesterday. Baseball Reference and Wikipedia, along with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Indianapolis Indians media guides, all tab Barkett’s birthdate as Sept. 5, 1974. Somewhere early in Barkett’s playing career, a publication received the inaccurate birthdate, and it has stuck in publications throughout his playing and coaching career.
