Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide Investigators have been informed that Vincent Lanking has died from injuries. Detectives will meet with the Marion County Prosecutors Office to discuss and review new charges in this case.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives investigate after a critically injured man is found shot inside a motel lobby.
Just before 11:30 a.m. on March 31, 2017, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District were sent to the 6800 block of East 21st Street to respond to a person shot. Officers quickly arrived and found lying on the motel lobby floor a 32-year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. EMS personnel arrived and transported the victim to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Due to the victim’s injuries, currently believed to be life-threatening, the victim’s name is not being released.
East District officers quickly apprehended a female later identified as 34-year-old Xiyya Jackson nearby the scene. Witnesses told officers that Xiyya Jackson was the shooter of the critically wounded man. The suspect was taken to IMPD Homicide Office to be questioned by homicide detectives. After being questioned by detectives they arrested the suspect on a preliminary criminal charge of attempted murder. Detectives also recovered from the suspect a handgun believed used by the suspect. The suspect was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center to be processed and booked on a criminal offense. In the coming days detectives plan to review their investigative findings with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision.
Detectives have not yet released the relationship between the suspect and victim, but they do not believe the shooting was random; nor have they indicated if this shooting is believed to be domestic related. Once additional details are known, or the victim’s condition worsens this news release will be updated with new and relevant information.
