On May 17, 2017, just after 9:00 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of 10th Street and Holmes Avenue to aid a 14-year-old teenager stuck by a van. When officers arrived, they found the teenager lying in the street suffering from serious injuries. EMS personnel arrived and transported the victim to Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition.
The driver of the striking vehicle (van) remained at the scene to speak with investigators about the crash. The driver of the van identified as 27-year-old Anya Byrd is cooperating with investigators. Investigators have transported the driver to a certified facility for a standard blood draw to test for illegal substances. At this time, investigators do not suspect alcohol.
Preliminarily, investigators were told that a green Dodge van was heading west on North 10th St. when the 14-year-old riding his bike was heading north on Holmes Av with other kids. Ms. Byrd stated she had a green light when a bicyclist crossed going north on Holmes Avenue. Ms. Byrd indicated she did not see the second bicyclist when she struck him.
