On Sunday, May 14, 2017, at approximately 6:15 p.m., IMPD officers were sent to the 3800 block of West Michigan Street reference a person shot. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive man laying in the parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound. EMS personnel rushed the victim to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim’s name should be obtained by contacting the Marion County Coroner’s Office during regular business hours.
Officers were also sent to the 70 block of North Lynnhurst; the caller indicated that he was the suspected shooter. Officers arrived and detained, a 30-year-old man, whose name is not being made public, into custody without incident. The man was taken to IMPD Headquarters for questioning.
Detectives learned during the course of the investigation, that several people were gathered for a celebration and the suspect was driving erratically (doing burnouts and donuts in the parking lot) in the presence of small children. Several people called the police, but the victim left before police arrived. The victim returned threatening to shoot people because someone had called the police. He started to chase the person involved, who possess a valid handgun permit, threatening to kill him. The person involved fearing that he or others standing nearby, including small children, would be shot pulled his handgun and shot the victim several times. The person involved fled the scene and immediately contacted police. After consultation with the Marion County Procurator’s Office, detectives decided that the person involved would not be arrested pending further investigation and review.
