On 4/28/17 just before 3:30 p.m., detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Robbery Coordination Unit were conducting a covert investigation on possible multiple burglaries involving a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Detectives initially observed the Jeep in the 700 blk. of S. Meussing. The Jeep suddenly left the roadway, crossed a field, and parked near a barn. After several minutes the vehicle was seen leaving the area and then observed at another location along a wood line for several minutes. The Jeep was joined by a Gator vehicle as they left the area.
Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on both the Jeep and the Gator but both vehicles refused to stop, and the Gator veered off into an empty field with officers giving chase. The Jeep continued onto Mitthoeffer Rd. where one of the occupants fired several shots at pursuing officers. Officers lost sight of the Jeep and Gator in the area of Washington St. and Mitthoeffer Rd. Officers quickly found the Jeep behind a strip mall in the 9200 blk. of E. Washington St., and quickly established a perimeter. Both K-9 and SWAT officers were deployed to search and safely find the fugitive suspects who were considered armed and dangerous. Officers found inside the rear of the Jeep several items believed to have been stolen.
Eventually, an IMPD K-9 Officer and his partner tracked two suspects, identified as 18-year-old Michael Hostetter and 21-year-old Steven Cosand, inside a barn behind a residence in the 100 blk. of S. Post Rd. SWAT officers entered and took both suspects into custody without incident. Officers using intelligence and observations tracked the third suspect to his home address of 3800 blk. of Spann where they took 19-year-old Daltyn Randolph into custody without incident several hours later.
MSD Warren Township was temporarily locked down for precautionary measures only. Thankfully no injuries, property damage, nor officers returning fire were reported. All three suspects were arrested on a preliminary felony charge of burglary, but additional charges are likely. At this time due to the active nature of this investigation booking (current or previous) are not available. Further updates will be provided as they become available. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the investigative information for a charging decision.
