Fishers Rotary Presents 2012 WaterIsLife Charity Ball December 1st

On December 1, 2012 the Fishers Rotary Club will be hosting the 2012 WaterIsLife Charity Ball at the Forum Credit Union Conference Center located at: 11313 USA Parkway, Fishers, Indiana 46037. The event will be held starting at 7:00 pm with Black Tie Optional. A VIP reception will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.

Proceeds from the Auction and Charity Ball will go to give fresh sanitary water wells to rural villages in the west African country of Sierra Leone. Each well gives a village of up to 1,000 people water, saving and improving the quality of life of many for years to come.

The event also includes a Christmas Tree Trail with trees to be auctioned at the event on December 1st. Each tree has been beautifully decorated by local professional decorators. The “Trail” starts at Allisonville Nursery and can be viewed during the month of November.

The Charity Ball promises to be the event of the season, and all 12 trees will go up for auction the night of the event. The winning bidders will have their trees delivered to the local place of their choice.

“Year of Popcorn” at 2013 Indiana State Fair

Light and fluffy, sometimes sweet or salty, popcorn is one of America’s favorite snack foods. In Indiana, that means big business. The Hoosier state is the nation’s second largest popcorn producer, which is why popcorn will be the featured product at the 2013 Indiana State Fair.

“People have long known Indiana for being a tremendous corn-producing state, but very few folks know about our popcorn production,” said Indiana State Fair Executive Director Cindy Hoye. “This is the year we make sure all Hoosiers realize that their main movie-watching snack was likely grown and manufactured right here in Indiana.”

Almost all the popcorn in the world is grown in the United States, and the first popcorn ears are said to be about 4,000 years old. Indiana has several popcorn companies, some dating back to the early 1900s. Ironically, the tasty treat didn’t become popular until the Great Depression when it was one of the only “luxuries” people could afford. The advent of the microwave oven changed everything and eventually rocketed popcorn’s popularity to where it is today.

The 2013 Indiana State Fair will have “fun at every turn,” as the new theme declares, and much of it will be popcorn related. This is the seventh straight year the fair has highlighted one of Indiana’s agricultural commodities. Previously, the fair has featured corn, trees, tomatoes, pigs, soybeans and dairy cows.

Next year’s fair will run Aug. 2 – 18.

SOULFUL CHRISTMAS
Get your holiday groove on! Cozy up to the fire and connect to the soulful side of the season, as exemplified by the all-star roster of urban contemporary, R&B, and traditional Christmas songs.

We have always loved the music created at the junctions between genres:
Doo-Wop and Soul (The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes); and songs of Traditional Christmas Music.

Pop and Soul (anything from Motown, early Smokey Robinson). But every strand of Soul music seems to pass through one particular crossroads Christmas music.

This area has long been neglected by collectors, probably because we have all overdosed on the saccharine Christmas offerings that find their way onto the airwaves in early December and relentlessly bombard us until New Year’s. But there are some astonishing performances out there, and we have some of the best here for your seasonal delectation.

They are an eclectic bunch. Some are soulful versions of traditional hymns, carols or popular songs. Others are originals composed specially for the holidays. One is merely a recitation, but no less powerful for it. What they have in common is that, for whatever reason, the singers rose to the occasion and delivered terrifically soulful performances.

Although we are posting this in time for Christmas, no matter what time of year you are listening to these songs (and they sound great in July!) we hope the holidays are good for you.
