DADDY at The Sanctuary April 28

April 17, 2012 by Naptown Buzz

Free Range Concerts is proud to present DADDY at The Sanctuary April 28. I cannot stress what an incredible evening of music this will be. If you were lucky enough to catch any of our concerts with Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack or Lisa Oliver-Gray, you know what I’m talking about. DADDY is the full band play of these outstanding singers, songsmiths and musicians. Just ask Bart Chapman.

A word to the wise, February’s concert with the Tad Robinson band sold out before the show, so don’t be caught short-handed. Get your DADDY tickets today.

For those new to DADDY, here’s the scoop:
The band DADDY comes roaring up from Nashville, Tennessee, featuring prolific recording artists Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack. Drawing on juke-joint blues, swampy-groove country and honest-to-god rock and roll, with stops in gospel and beat-poet territory along the way, DADDY has been hailed by critics and fans for electrifying live performances that embrace a wide scope of what’s great about American music. Alabama homeboy Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Kentucky-bred Womack (two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) have a musical and personal kinship that flat out clicks. Featured with DADDY is Lisa Oliver-Gray, often mentioned as “the best voice in Nashville.” Do not miss this show—make a date now with DADDY!

Wanna see Will cook on guitar? Go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ljcI8GfYBg

Craving more? Send me an email.

If you haven’t been to the Sanctuary yet, you’re in for a real treat. Nancy Noel’s art gallery puts real live music in a glorious listening room. Classy bar and restaurant at your fingertips. Nary a video screen in sight. It’s all about the music, baby.

Record Store Day 2012 in Indianapolis

April 16, 2012 by Rachel Rubenstein

One of my favorite days each year comes around on the third Saturday of April: Record Store Day!

If you love limited edition vinyl albums, rare swag, live performances from bands and DJs and a celebration of all things music, this day is for you. Record Store Day is an occasion where artists, fans and independent record stores all come together to stir up excitement and boost the record store economy, and at each store is somewhat of a mini block party for people of all ages to enjoy!

This year, Record Store Day falls on Saturday, April 21st. If you’re looking for something to do and want to check out this music-lover’s holiday, here are three local independent stores that celebrate in a big way!

Indy CD & Vinyl

Opening its doors at 10 am, Indy CD & Vinyl has an in-store lineup consisting of Loyal Divide at 1 pm, New Old Cavalry at 2 pm and Brother Nature Band at 4 pm. If digging through records become exhausting, re-energize with some coffee supplied by Monon Coffee Shop and a homemade cookie by Jeanne Zeigler! Hang out and say hi to some of our favorite people, Annie Skinner and Shimmercore!

LUNA Music

Each year, LUNA opens its doors at 8 am to celebrate the unique culture of independent record stores. Grab an Upland beer while you shop the sidewalk sale, loaded with $1 CDs and vinyl albums. Browse through the Handmade Promenade on the sidewalk or pick up a concert poster from Mile 44. Laundromatinee will be on site shooting video and handing out goody bags, and Jolly Tamale will be set up out front all day. Live performances will be going on inside from noon until 6 pm, including one from Ancient Slang, made up of DMA, John Rambo, We Are Hex and Eric & The Happy Thoughts!

Vibes Music

Starting at noon, Vibes is putting on an all day showcase brought to you by local label Gloryhole Records. In between sets, you can groove to tunes from DJ Jewey Ramone. Christian Taylor & Homeschool/Adam Kuhn will start the day off at noon, followed by a dozen other local artists including Ancient Slang, Vacation Club, The Kemps, Humans, Learner Dancer, Dead Frets and more. The party goes on until 10 pm, so come enjoy the live acts while searching for your RSD treasures.

Indianapolis Symphonic Choir Performs Berlioz Requiem

April 12, 2012 by Naptown Buzz

The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir marks its 75th anniversary season with a performance of the Berlioz Requiem. In terms of performing forces, this piece is among the largest musical compositions for choir and orchestra and summons to the stage over 200 singers, a large orchestra, tenor soloist and four off-stage brass bands.

The performance is on Saturday, May 5, 2012, 8:00 p.m. at Hilbert Circle Theatre. Tickets are available at www.indychoir.org or by calling the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Box office: (317) 639-4300. Ticket prices range from $20-$70, and student and group rates are available.

“We wanted to do something big for the Choir’s 75th, something that few others could tackle,” states Artistic Director Eric Stark. “Bingo! The Berlioz Requiem really is of such epic proportions. This Choir should be exceedingly proud of its role in the choral pantheon: performing newly commissioned works as well as these timeless musical gems all in one season. Perhaps at no other time in the Choir’s history has it enjoyed such notable success, and especially paired with a bright future.”

This performance unites the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Butler University Choir and University Chorale, tenor soloist Joseph Shadday, under the direction of Eric Stark.

The Wolff & Clark Expedition To Play Famed Jazz Kitchen In Indianapolis

February 14, 2012 by Naptown Buzz

New York, NY – The jazz community is buzzing with excitement over the news of a special live engagement at the famed Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis by the Wolff & Clark Expedition on Saturday February 25, 2012. Featuring jazz legends Michael Wolff and Mike Clark, the concert is sure to be an unforgettable evening of hot jazz and funk. The group also features local Indianapolis musicians Rob Dixon on tenor sax and and popular jazz bassist Frank Smith. Hot off the heels of a very successful engagement at the Jazz Standard in New York, which featured James Genus on bass, Lenny Pickett from Tower of Power and now leader of the SNL band, and jazz virtuoso Steve Wilson on alto sax, the Wolff & Clark Expedition are preparing to tear it up in Indianapolis!

Performing together since the 1970s both Wolff and Clark individually have had stellar music careers. Michael Wolff is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and bandleader, and is best known for his melodically, fresh, and rhythmically compelling piano style. Wolff made his recording debut in 1972 with Cal Tjader, and went on to record with Cannonball Adderley, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sonny Rollins, Tony Williams, Christian McBride and many others. As pianist and music director for jazz singer Nancy Wilson, Michael wrote orchestral arrangements and conducted more than 25 major symphony orchestras worldwide. From 1989 to 1994, Michael served as the band leader for the Aresenio Hall Show, which heightened his visibility and gave him the opportunity to perform with many established artists such as Ray Charles, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and saxophonist/president Bill Clinton. Michael Wolff has released 12 critically acclaimed solo albums to date as a leader, ‘Joe’s Strut’ being the most recent. He was a winner of the BMI Music Award for television composition and was also the winner of the Gold Gift Award in Japan for piano. Michael will be playing a solo piano concert on Thursday Feb 23, 2012 at University of Toledo, in Toledo, Ohio, as part of their Art Tatum solo piano concert.

What can be said about Mike Clark except that he is a true drum legend! Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s ‘Thrust’ album, which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk”, Mike considers himself a jazz drummer, and in fact has become one of the most vital to sit behind a set. He’s performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Rob Dixon, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Jack Wilkins, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, James Genus, Bob Hurst, Chris Potter, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., Bill Doggett, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Mose Allison, Maxine Brown, Gil Evans and his orchestra and many illuminating artists too numerous to list. Mike is currently putting the finishing touches to his forthcoming solo CD ‘Indigo Blue’, which features Randy Brecker, Christian McBride, Ron Dixon and Antonio Farao.
