Water Liars’ debut album was entirely unplanned. Recorded on a whim, with one microphone, the then unnamed rock band consisting of St. Louis, MO songwriter, vocalist, guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Oxford, MS drummer, producer, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant casually convened to play and record.

An acoustic solo show will take place November 4th at 7pm. Tickets are $10.

The Death of Sydney Black at Big Car Service Center

Death for Sydney Black, which walks a line between being pointedly truthful and horribly offensive, is a dark comedy about six teenage girls navigating the treacherous landscape of Northeast Valley High. When the new girl, Nancy, comes to town she must channel her entire self-worth into overthrowing the most popular girl at school: Sydney Black. As she  takes this journey, led by her quirky, Asian sidekick Jen, she discovers both the overt and covert girl-on-girl violence perpetrated throughout the school. With live music, original songs, and a talented all female cast, this promises to be quite the ride, a side-splitting satire about what it means to grow up as an all-American girl.

The Big Car Service Center, located at 3819 Lafayette Rd. in Indianapolis, IN, will host Death for Sydney Black, opening on Thursday, November 1, and running through Saturday, November 17, for a total of nine (9) performances.

Music Review: Atlas Genius Through the Glass

It turns out that the land down under has more to offer, musically, than that guy that we used to know.  In fact, a wealth of Aussie alternative acts exists; enough to keep even the most avid, obscure-music-lovin’ fans satisfied.  One such band, Atlas Genius, is on tour with the Silversun Pickups in the US right now.  The band’s EP, Through the Glass, is available on iTunes.

The ensemble isn’t comprised of just any skinny-jean-wearing, bearded boys.  No, these skinny-jean-wearing, bearded boys happen to be brothers (well, all except the Brit on keys, who happens to be their friend). The band’s sound is reminiscent of bands like Cut Copy, Phoenix, and Death Cab for Cutie and other bands that predated the onset of electro-pop.

The first listen of the record will certainly make idle toes tap.  Synth-drum beats and dancy tempos capture the listener’s attention, but meaningful lyrics deliver messages that resonate.  These messages are accompanied by melodic rhythm guitar and delivered by a soulful, raw voice.

The obvious radio single of the EP is “Trojans.”  It’s a catchy tune that sticks in your head and makes you think about the meaning long after the music has stopped playing.  What listeners may not realize is that there are two versions on the record:  the happy-go-lucky pop song that gets played on the radio, and the melancholy acoustic version that leaves the listener with goose bumps.

The other two tracks included on the EP are “Back Seat” that has a backbone made for moving, and “Symptoms” which is dark and melodic while maintaining an upbeat rhythm.  Both of these songs have potential to be just as infectious as the Freshman single.  In all, the EP gives the listener a taste of a band with great potential and leaves them wanting more.

“From Dark Pages” at Morris-Butler House

A stone pathway lit with lanterns leads me to the side entrance of the Morris-Butler House, setting a spooky scene for the performance of “From Dark Pages.”  The progressive play, written specifically for the house, takes the audience on a journey through the hallways, parlors and studies on a search for Jack the Ripper.  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his character Sherlock Holmes, along with a faithful butler named Morris, usher the small audience through the rooms and warn us of the ever-present danger.

The play works as a series of vignettes featuring an all-star Victorian cast, including Edgar Allen Poe and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.  If you’re familiar with the various stories, like “The Telltale Heart” and The Turn of the Screw, the scenes lose some of their magic and unpredictability.  However, Sir Arthur continually entertains us with his sense of humor and mischief.  There isn’t a great deal of tension in the story and  the mystery develops without many surprises.

“From Dark Pages” is certainly fun, yet walks a strange line demographically.  The subject matter of the play is rather adult, considering Jack the Ripper dismembered prostitutes; “From Dark Pages” doesn’t skimp on the graphic details.  The ending especially struck me as too mature for the group of children that were present.  However, there was no harm done and none of the parents seemed particularly perturbed.  I feel that the whole experience may have been more effective if it had been written specifically for adults OR children.

I encourage anyone interested to check out “From Dark Pages” for themselves.  The show will run October 18th to the 20th and the 25th to the 27th, with shows at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30pm.
