IMPD: Vehicle Pursuit – 1600 Block of Deloss Street

At approximately 12:00 a.m. today, an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in the 1600 block of East Deloss Street. The officer conducted a routine Bureau of Motor Vehicle check and discovered that the vehicle was a stolen vehicle.

The officer initiated a traffic stop but the vehicle refused to comply with officer’s enforcement command and instead fled. The driver fled north on I-65 exiting at Washington Street. The driver then fled north on Pine Street onto Ohio Street where it dead-ends. The driver hit the curb and struck train tracks north of Ohio Street. The vehicle lost control and rolled over. After the vehicle finally came to a rest the driver climbed out of the vehicle and fled on foot. With the assistance of a IMPD K-9 Officer and his partner, the suspect was found hiding in a nearby shed. The suspect refused the K-9 Officers commands and was subsequently bitten by the K-9.

Upon further investigation of the vehicle, officers found both a male and female passenger who suffered minor cuts. All three occupants were transported to Eskenazi Health in good conditions. The driver has been identified as 28-year-old Corey Horton of Indianapolis. Officer believe that the driver may have been under the influence of some unknown illegal narcotic; therefore, after obtaining a warrant, the driver’s blood was submitted for testing. The suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, Resisting Law Enforcement and Vehicle Theft.

Johnson County Sheriff Deputies-Involved in a shooting in the 8000 block of South Bluff Road

On July 9, 2015 at approximately 10:40 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the 8000 block of South Bluff Road on a call for assistance involving Johnson County Sheriff Deputies. Prior to arriving, IMPD dispatch confirmed a suicidal individual possibly armed, refused to comply with deputies. As officers arrived they came in contact with the suspect later identified as 31 year-old Daryll Hedges who refused to exit his vehicle.

IMPD and Johnson County Sheriff Deputies gave loud verbal commands to the suspect ordering him to exit his vehicle with his hands up. The suspect refused to comply and charged the deputies resulting in the discharge of their department weapons. IMPD officers took custody of the suspect and immediately deployed their trauma kits providing medical care while waiting for EMS personnel to arrive. At no time during this incident did any IMPD officer discharge a department issued weapon.

The suspect was transported to Methodist in critical condition with gunshot wounds. This is an active, on-going investigation; detectives and Crime Lab personnel processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. At this time, detectives with IMPD Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T) responded to the scene and have begun a criminal investigation into the incident. Investigators with the Johnson County Sheriff Department arrived on scene to assist investigators.

IMPD: Police Merit Board Terminates Former Officer Jason Barber

Today the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Police Merit Board upheld Chief Rick Hite’s recommendation for termination of Mr. Jason Barber. The Police Merit Board met this morning and heard hours of testimony and reviewed evidence presented from the Office of Corporation Counsel, Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, IMPD’s Internal Affairs and Mr. Barber (representing himself). The board voted and rendered a unanimous decision in favor of Chief Hite’s recommendation.

“This concludes a lengthy internal and public process for IMPD. After reviewing the policies, practices and previous recommendations made by a former Chief, I stand committed with the recommendation for termination of Mr. Barber”, said Chief Rick Hite. “I feel the Merit Board has rendered a just and fair decision after having reviewed all the pertinent facts of this case. This process will enable the department, as well as Mr. Barber, to move forward in a way that is both equitable and fair for both”.

The Merit Board found that Mr. Barber violated several of the department’s rules and regulations stemming from a March 2008 incident for which Mr. Barber was subsequently arrested.

IMPD: Death Investigation 3600 Block of North Gale Street

Earlier today, IMPD detectives were informed that Sir Christopher Lee Jones was arrested by the Kansas Highway Patrol on Friday. The suspect is being held in Kansas on a murder warrant awaiting extradition back to Indianapolis. A previous booking photo is not available due to a continuation of the investigation by detectives.

Homicide detectives need assistance in locating Sir Christopher Lee Jones described as a black male, in his 20’s, 200lbs., thick shoulder length dreads.

Mr. Jones is wanted in connection with the murder of Lakim ‘Devon’ Mabry. If you know his whereabouts call 911 immediately. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Monday July 6th, 2015 – 2:39 PM

At approximately 12:30 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were sent to the 3600 block of North Gale Street on a report of shots fired run. While enroute 9-1-1 dispatchers subsequently informed officers that 9-1-1 callers were saying a person had been shot.

When officers arrived they found an unresponsive male victim suffering from apparent signs of gunshot trauma. EMS personnel pronounced the victim as deceased at the scene. No name or age are available as of this release because the victim has not yet been positively identified. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will positively identify the victim and notify family at which time the victim’s name will become available.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency is processing the scene for forensic evidence, and detectives are canvassing the area for information. Detectives have not yet released any suspect information. The 3600 block of Gale Street is included in the Department of Public Safety Focus Area, specifically, 38th and Sherman corridor. IMPD: Death Investigation 4800 block E 17th Street

UPDATE: Saturday July 4th, 2015 – 2:20 PM

The decedent has been identified as Sharrod Crowe, 24, of Indianapolis. The second male victim, 24-year-old Bobby Williams Jr., continues to recover from his injuries at Eskenazi Hospital and is still listed in critical condition. Witnesses at the scene provided a limited description of a possible suspect seen fleeing from the scene. The description provided is a black male, wearing all black and armed with a gun. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 262-TIPS.

Friday July 3rd, 2015 – 11:54 PM

On July 3, 2015 at approximately 9:55 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched to the intersection of East 16th Street and Dequincy Street on a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with a gunshot wound to the chest in the alley north of East 16th Street. As officers canvassed the area, officers located a second adult, male victim with multiple gunshot wounds inside of a detached garage. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim located in the alley was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.

IMPD Homicide investigators are currently conducting their investigation and interviewing witnesses. Investigators located forced entry to the detached garage; however, it is unclear at this time the connection between the victims or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No motive has been established nor has a suspect description been determined. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency arrived to process the crime scene and gather forensic evidence. The victim’s identity is not being released pending positive identification and family notifications. More information will be released once investigators have an opportunity to conclude their investigation at the crime scene.

IMPD: One Dead, Three Others Shot, in the 500 block of North Lynn Street

On July 2, 2015, at approximately 11:51p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched to the 500 block of North Lynn Street on the report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found a male outside of a residence with a gunshot wound to the head. This victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

At approximately 11:56 p.m., IMPD officers were notified that 3 additional victims had been driven to Eskenazi Hospital with gunshot wounds. The victims indicated they, too, had been shot in the 500 block of North Lynn Street. These victims are currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

At this time, IMPD Homicide investigators are canvassing the area for witnesses and potential evidence. Investigators believe the victims were shot while standing in the front yard of an abandoned house by individuals in a passing vehicle. Investigators do not believe this to be a random act; however, the details surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency arrived to process the crime scene and gather forensic evidence. The victim’s identity is not being released at this time, pending positive identification and family notifications. IMPD: Fatal Stabbing in the 800 Block of Udell Street

Detectives arrested 34-year-old Benjamin Faulk for the murder of 25-year-old Jamie Hines on Thursday, July 2nd in the 800 blk. of Udell St.

The suspect turned himself into detectives on Monday, July 6th at IMPD Headquarters without incident. After being questioned by detectives the suspect was arrested on a warrant charging him with Murder. The suspect is currently being held in the Marion County Jail.

UPDATE – Friday July 3rd, 2015 – 2:25 PM

The victim has been positively identified as Jamie Hines, 25, of Indianapolis. The investigation is on-going and investigators continue to follow-up on leads in this incident. Friday July 3rd, 2015 – 12:19 AM

On July 2, 2015 at approximately 9:59 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received a call a person stabbed in the 800 block of Udell Street. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from stab wounds in his stomach and neck. The victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital but died a short time later.

At this time, IMPD Homicide investigators are currently conducting their investigation and interviewing witnesses. Investigators believe the suspect and victim had an argument inside of a residence, which led to the stabbing. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency arrived to process the crime scene and gather forensic evidence. The victim’s identity is not being released pending positive identification and family notifications. IMPD: UPDATE on Death Investigation 4500 N. Dearbon Avenue.

On June 12, 2015 at approximately 8:11 p.m., North District officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched to the 4500 block of North Dearborn Street on a report of a decomposed body found in a wooded area. The IMPD Homicide Unit responded to the scene and began their investigation. The decomposed body was later identified to be Jeremy Johnson, 23, of Muncie. After alerting investigators with the Muncie Police Department, it was confirmed that Mr. Johnson had been reported missing by family in October 2014.

After further investigation into the death of Mr. Johnson, 27-year-old Martize Kirkland (pictured) was identified as a person of interest in his death. On June 26, 2015, members of IMPD’s Gang Unit located Martize Kirkland and transported him to the Homicide office for questioning. After being interviewed, Kirkland was arrested and preliminary charged with Murder by investigators. On July 1, 2015, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office filed formal charges against Kirkland for Murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, auto theft and felon carrying a handgun. Kirkland is being currently being held in the Marion County Jail.

IMPD: Investigators Seek Assistance Identifying Bank Robbery Suspect

On July 1, 2015 at approximately 10:15 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 3600 block of Kentucky Avenue on a bank robbery. Upon arrival, officers were informed that an adult, white male entered the business and passed a demand to the bank employee implying he was armed. After complying with the his demands, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction of travel with an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspect was described as a white male, in his 50’s, medium build measuring approximately 5’10”. He was last seen wearing a gray jacket or long-sleeved shirt, khaki pants, and black glasses.

One Dead, One Critical in 1200 block of West 29th Street Shootings

On July 1, 2015, at approximately 3:26 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) were dispatched to the 1200 block of West 29th Street on the report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive male outside of a residence with a gunshot wound. This victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

At approximately 3:33 a.m., IMPD officers were subsequently dispatched to another person shot in the 1200 block of Eugene Street. Officers located a male outside of a residence that had been shot in the lower extremities. This victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

At this time, IMPD Homicide investigators are canvassing the area for witnesses and potential evidence. Investigators believe both victims were shot in the 1200 block of West 29^th Street, and they are working to determine the relationship between the two victims. Investigators do not believe this to be a random act; however, the details surrounding the victim’s death are still under investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency arrived to process the crime scene and gather forensic evidence. The victim’s identity is not being released at this time, pending positive identification and family notifications.
