Gander Mountain is Liquidating in Indy, is NOT Closing All Stores

May 7, 2017 by Brian Groce

The Gander Mountain “Going Out Of Business” email hit my inbox Friday evening, which really wasn't much of a shock. And upon my initial look, it just didn't have the feel of a truly “store closing” situation. It smelled of marketing and legal agreement.

Take a look at the email below, then let's get down to the truth of what many in the media are reporting as “store closings”.

As you may know, Gander Mountain has gone through Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and was acquired by Camping World.

Yes, Gander Mountain is liquidating the store inventory. But in typical fashion, many news outlets are taking the marketing of this at face value.

Sure, with all sorts of retailers going the way of the buffalo, I can get why they might just assume this. But for a change, how about we get the TRUE information straight from the horse's mouth before spouting things off? Such “reporting” will end up sending a company truly out of business if you're reporting that it's going out of business.

So how about we listen to the person who is most “in the know” as to what's going on, Marcus Lemonis, Chairman & CEO of Camping World. Watch as he takes to Periscope to correct what many in the media are reporting.

So here's the gist.

Someone else owns the current Gander Mountain inventory, which they are liquidating chain wide. Once that is complete, Camping World aims to keep 70 stores open, which will be completely restocked.

The Greenwood and Avon stores in the Indianapolis area are slated to STAY OPEN after the liquidation process.

So, yes, SOME Gander Mountain stores will be closing. The locations that were recently announced as closing are most likely staying closed.

And around Indiana, I see that Evansville & Fort Wayne locations are staying open as well.

So, bottom line, take everything you see reported by the news with a grain of salt. There's a chance that they don't know what they're talking about.
