Dave “The King” Wilson of local Indianapolis radio and Indy 500 coverage fame has opened Santa’s Pitstop in Speedway, Indiana.

The mission of Santa’s Pitstop is “to offer unique Christmas decor and locally produced gifts. We believe the world needs the Christmas Spirit all year long. Santa’s Pit Stop Christmas Shoppe strives to foster the feeling of giving, forgiving, and love we all feel during the celebration of Christ’s birth, the love of family and our fellow human beings.”

The soft opening is Friday, November 8, 2024, until 7 pm.

The Grand Opening is Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 11 am to 7 pm.

Indianapolis Christmas Tree Recycling Runs Through January 31, 2023

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) and Indy Parks will once again begin accepting real Christmas trees for mulching at multiple drop-off locations in public parks throughout the city from Sunday, December 25, 2022, through Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Marion County residents are encouraged to drop off their real trees at these seven different locations so they may be mulched into soil blends for a second life. Dead trees in homes pose a fire hazard, so those without the ability to compost or mulch trees on their property have the opportunity to drop them off at one of the below sites.

Any and all tree stands, skirts, ornaments, tinsel, lights, garland, popcorn, stowaways, and all other decorative materials MUST be removed prior to drop off.

Trees should be dropped off only at the specially designated area within the park, and only between dawn and dusk. Please check the list carefully as the selected park locations vary from year-to-year and the site you brought your tree to last year may no longer be a site. Dropping off trees at locations not listed below is considered illegal dumping and is punishable by fines of up to $3,000.

Again, this service is provided for Marion County residents ONLY and is not offered for commercial use.

  • Riverside Park | 2420 East Riverside Drive | by the basketball court
  • Sahm Park | 6801 E. 91st Street | near the recycling bins
  • Riverwood Park | 7201 Crittenden Avenue

Each year, thousands of trees are repurposed through this city service. Residents with broken strings of lights are encouraged to properly recycle them via ToxDrop or RecycleForce.

Juneteenth Indianapolis Trash Pickup – Monday, June 19, 2023

Juneteenth will be observed as an Indianapolis city holiday but residential solid waste services and heavy trash service as well as curbside recycling will continue to operate on a standard schedule from June 19-23, 2023.

Indy DPW solid waste division leadership coordinated with members of AFSCME union local 725 to vote on whether solid waste crews would like to alter this work week, given the historic significance of the commemoration. Workers voted to continue with a standard weekly solid waste service schedule, even as City offices will be closed.

Indianapolis Juneteenth Trash Pickup Update

As many may have experienced, Indianapolis Trash Collection and Indianapolis Recycling Collection has been hit or miss this year, sometimes not collecting at all or on random days.

Also, the various waste collectors do not seem to be on the same page for Juneteenth week pickup. Bottom line, you may want to put out your trash and recycling on your normal day and hope that it gets picked up.

Per the Indianapolis Department of Public Works:

Indy DPW and WM trucks are collecting solid waste utilizing the slide schedule of Tuesday through Saturday.

Residents with services from Republic Services will be able to set carts out on their regular collection day or on the sliding schedule as routes will run twice this week.

Indianapolis Christmas Tree Recycling Runs Through January 31, 2022

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) and Indy Parks will now accept live Christmas trees for recycling at multiple drop-off locations in public parks throughout the city.

Beginning today through Monday, January 31, 2022, residents can drop off live trees at eight different locations. Trees must be free of ornaments, tinsel, tree stands, and all other decorative materials. Trees should be dropped off only at the specially designated area within the park, and only between dawn and dusk.

Drop-off locations are as follows:​

  • Broad Ripple Park (1610 Broad Ripple Avenue), East side of the parking lot
  • Ellenberger Park (5301 East St. Clair Street), Northeast corner by the pool

  • Krannert Park (605 South High School Road), North side of the building
  • Northwestway Park (5253 West 62nd Street), to the left of the entrance

The Indianapolis live tree recycling service recycles trees to be composted and eventually used as mulch. Last year 6,896 Christmas trees were chipped by Park Maintenance.

The live tree recycling program is not for commercial use and is solely for Marion County residents. Residents should also remember this service is for live Christmas trees only and any other items left would be considered illegal dumping.
