2023 Indianapolis 500 Prize Money
INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, May 29, 2023) – The Indianapolis 500 purse record was shattered for the second year in a row after a monumentally successful 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, with race winner Josef Newgarden of Team Penske earning $3.666 million from a total purse of $17,021,500.
After record-breaking payouts in 2022, this is the largest purse and largest winner’s payout in the century-plus history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” The year’s average payout for NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers was $500,600, which also exceeds last year’s average of $485,000.
In 2022, the Indianapolis 500 purse was $16,000,200 and the year’s winner payout was $3.1 million. Prior to 2022, the largest Indianapolis 500 purse was $14.4 million for the 2008 Indianapolis 500.
Second-place finisher Marcus Ericsson of Chip Ganassi Racing took home $1.043 million, exceeding the take-home prize for last year’s second-place finisher.
“This is the greatest race in the world, and it was an especially monumental Month of May featuring packed grandstands and intense on-track action,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said. “Now, we have the best end card possible for the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500: a record-breaking purse for the history books.”

INDYCAR Drivers Surprised with Return of Long-missing Helmets
Drivers typically don’t care for surprises in their race day routine, but this morning provided an undeniably sentimental moment as four previously missing racing helmets were returned to their owners. Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Ed Carpenter and Sarah Fisher had just emerged from the drivers’ meeting for The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio. Jaws dropped and eyes widened as the helmets were uncovered.
“A blast from the past,” Andretti Autosport’s Hunter-Reay said of the Rahal Letterman Racing helmet he wore for his 2007 Verizon IndyCar Series debut, ironically at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “This makes me feel old. Thank you.”
The helmets, as well as ones belonging to Danica Patrick and the late Dan Wheldon, were stolen in 2008 from an INDYCAR fan experience trailer parked in Speedway, Ind. All six were recently returned to INDYCAR.
“Helmets are important to any driver,” Hunter-Reay said. “It’s a piece of your career and a lot of memories come with it. This is a pretty important helmet. I kind of wrote it off. It’s nice to have it back.”
Fisher’s white helmet was also important – it was covered with fan signatures and worn in her series comeback race in 2006.
“It was my comeback helmet, my first race back after having driven some stock cars for Richard Childress,” said Fisher, who retired from racing in 2010 and is now the pace car driver at Verizon IndyCar Series events. “(Team owner) Dennis Reinbold put me back in an Indy car in 2006. It was such a quick turnaround; I didn’t have time to paint a helmet. My husband now, Andy (O’Gara), had this great idea to take my helmet to the autograph session and have the fans sign it so that it would kind of be painted.”
At the time of the theft, Fisher said, “I was devastated. It meant so much to me.”
Carpenter, now the series’ only owner/driver, wore his recovered helmet for Vision Racing in 2007.
“It’s nice we have all the INDYCAR tech stickers or otherwise I probably wouldn’t remember what year it was from anyway,” he said. “I had forgotten that it was stolen. I remember giving it to put on that trailer. It’s cool to have it back.”
Castroneves took his 2001 Team Penske helmet and gave it to an unsuspecting Vince Kremer, now vice president of operations at INDYCAR who was Bettenhausen Motorsports’ crew chief when Castroneves was an Indy car rookie in 1998.
“This one’s for you,” Castroneves said to Kremer, who was visibly stunned and emotional.
As their bond developed in 1998, Castroneves promised Kremer, “You’re going to get one of my helmets.” Each year since, Kremer enjoyed teasing the Brazilian with a reminder. Not anymore.
“He just totally shocked me and blew me away,” Kremer said.

Wednesday, May 18, 2016 was an active Day 3 of Indy 500 practice.
We have audio from Pat McAfee, Tommy Johnson Jr., Shawn Langdon, Sage Karam, Will Power, Gabby Chavez and Ryan Hunter-Reay on the show today, as well as a recap of what went on.
hhgregg “Race An Andretti” Was a Blast!
Each May we have the privilege of doing some pretty cool events related to the Indy 500 and INDYCAR. While we don’t officially kick off the Indy 500 festivities until Monday, today we had the opportunity to head up to hhgregg with the entire family to “Race an Andretti”.
During May we don’t have a lot of time to enjoy the festivities with the kids, and with the demise of IMS “Community Day” last year, that left a hole during the time slots we’re not working the Indy 500. So I have to thank hhgregg & Andretti Autosport for putting this event together.
My kids had a blast at this event, and will be talking about it for years to come. And by the looks of the crowd, I’m sure that they’re not the only ones. These are the type of events that make memories and also make new fans.
As far as the racing side of things goes, the professionals cleaned house. I think I saw maybe one person beat them, and I believe that was by someone who races RC cars a lot.
Even though I didn’t win, I enjoyed myself immensely. And it was quite nice to have an afternoon doing something race related that was relaxing AND with the entire family. For tomorrow we hit the track running.
Race an Andretti May 15th at hhgregg 96th Street
Join Naptown Buzz and Andretti Autosport drivers Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay & Carlos Munoz at the north side hhgregg (4161 E. 96th Street) on Sunday, May 15th, for your chance to Race an Andretti on the remote control course in the parking lot!
This family-friendly event will take place in the hhgregg parking lot from 1:30PM – 3:30PM, and all three drivers will be available for autographs and photos.
Come and enjoy some food and prizes during and event you’ll never forget.
