On May 19, 2025, INDYCAR announced penalties for Team Penske’s Nos. 2 and 12 cars due to modified attenuators, violating Rule 14.7.8.16, during the 109th Indianapolis 500 (ad) presented by Gainbridge. After confirming the infraction, both cars—driven by Josef Newgarden and Will Power—have been relegated to the 32nd and 33rd starting positions, respectively, based on their qualifying times.
“The integrity of the Indianapolis 500 is paramount,” said INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles. “Starting at the tail of the field is the appropriate penalty for this clear violation.” Meanwhile, Car No. 3, driven by Scott McLaughlin, was found to have a legal attenuator and will start 10th, as it qualified for the Top 12.
Additional penalties include suspending team strategists for Nos. 2 and 12 for the remainder of the event, fining each entry $100,000, and forfeiting their qualification points and pit position selections. The field will adjust pit selections accordingly.
INDYCAR emphasized maintaining fair competition and the event’s positive momentum. The Indy 500 (ad) airs on FOX, FOX Deportes, and the FOX Sports app at 10 a.m. ET on May 25. Visit IMS.com for details.
