The Marion County Public Health Department advises residents to take necessary precautions as snow and cold temperatures are in the forecast.
Safety and Health Warnings
Limit time spent outside and cover exposed skin to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. Signs include confusion, shivering, and slurred speech in adults, as well as cold, red skin and low energy in infants. Seek medical attention immediately if the body temperature falls below 95 degrees.
- Check on others: Ensure older relatives, neighbors, or those with special needs have adequate heat.
- Infant Safety: Never allow infants to sleep in a cold room.
- Pet Safety: Bring pets inside or provide adequate shelter and access to unfrozen water.
Home & Utility Safety
Take steps now to prevent home damage and carbon monoxide poisoning:
| Hazard | Action to Take |
| Freezing Pipes | Leave faucets on a continuous drip, open cabinet doors beneath sinks, and keep the thermostat set consistently day and night. |
| Carbon Monoxide (CO) | Only use fuel-burning units (gas, kerosene) according to instructions and ensure ventilation. Install a battery-operated CO alarm. |
| Generators | Never use generators inside or in the garage. Locate them outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows/doors/vents. |
| Space Heaters | Keep space heaters at least three feet from flammable items. Do not use extension cords. |
