INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) has activated crews for a six-day snow clearing operation beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, and continuing through Tuesday, January 20. This activation is in preparation for several days of anticipated winter weather.
Indy DPW/AFSCME Local #725 and Indianapolis Fleet Services/AFSCME Local #3131 crews will focus on a tiered system to ensure efficient snow removal:
- Priority one streets, including major city thoroughfares and routes adjacent to hospitals and fire stations, will be cleared at measurable snowfall.
- Priority two streets – secondary roads near schools, publicly-funded preschools, trustee offices, and township small claims courts – will be addressed when snow accumulation reaches at least two inches.
If snowfall exceeds four inches, Indy DPW contractors may assist with clearing residential streets. Residents are responsible for maintaining their property by clearing the area around mailboxes and sidewalks.
Indy DPW advises motorists to drive cautiously during winter weather conditions and give space to crews working to treat and clear roadways.
