The roar of engines returns to 16th Street tomorrow as the 110th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge kicks into high gear. Following the opening ceremonies, Tuesday, May 12, marks the first full day of track activity, where the entire field takes to the 2.5-mile oval to find that perfect race-day balance.
Whether you are a lifelong “railbird” or a first-time visitor, Tuesday offers one of the best opportunities of the month to see the cars at full speed in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Tuesday’s Schedule
The gates open early, giving fans plenty of time to find a spot on the mounds or in the stands before the green flag drops for the afternoon session.
- 10 a.m.: Public Gates Open
- Noon – 6 p.m.: Practice (All Cars)
Tickets and Admission
General Admission for practice is just $25. One of the best perks of practice days is the flexibility; your ticket allows you to roam between the infield viewing mounds and select grandstands. This lets you see the cars dive into Turn 1, scream through the Short Chute, or blast down the front stretch—all on the same afternoon.
- Family Tip: Children 15 and under get in free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Know Before You Go: Parking and Payments
To make your trip to the Brickyard as smooth as possible, keep these logistical tips in mind:
- Parking: Free public parking is available in the infield (Turn 3) and Lot 7 (North 40), accessible via Gate 10 off 30th Street. Dedicated ADA and motorcycle parking are also available at no cost in specified lots.
- Cashless Venue: IMS is a cashless facility. Bring your credit/debit cards or use tap-to-pay on your phone for all concessions, merchandise, and tickets. If you only have cash, visit the Cash-to-Card machine in Pagoda Plaza to transfer your funds onto a temporary debit card.
- The Museum: While you’re at the track, stop by the IMS Museum (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to see the history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
