Weather Forces Indy 500 Qualifying Shuffle: New Sunday Schedule Announced

Mother Nature threw a wrench into Saturday’s plans at the Brickyard, with persistent rain forcing the complete postponement of Day 1 time trials.

Because of the washout, INDYCAR officials have engineered an action-packed, high-stakes Super Sunday schedule for May 17. All 33 cars will get exactly one guaranteed four-lap run starting at noon to secure their spot on the grid or fight their way into the afternoon shootout.

Here is how the revised, fast-paced knockout format will work tomorrow.

The New Sunday Qualification Format

Because the field must be set in a single day, the traditional multi-day schedule is being condensed into a rapid-fire succession of sessions:

  • Positions 13–33: Locked in during the initial round of single attempts starting at noon.
  • The Top 12 Shootout: The 12 fastest cars from the noon session will advance to a shootout at approximately 4:30 p.m. running in reverse order of their lunchtime speeds. This session locks in starting rows 3 and 4 (positions 7 through 12).
  • The Firestone Fast Six: The absolute fastest six drivers from the Top 12 advance to the final round to battle for the front two rows, the prestigious NTT P1 Award, a $100,000 prize, and 12 crucial championship points.

The 100-MPH Cool Down: To protect the engines between these grueling back-to-back knockout rounds, cars will run mandatory cooling laps behind the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Pace Car at 100 mph to force airflow through the cooling ducts.

Official Qualification Order: 110th Indianapolis 500
