Indiana State Fairgrounds Ends Mask Mandate EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
INDIANA STATE FAIRGROUND MASK POLICY UPDATE
Fuel fans, please note that the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Indiana Farmers Coliseum have made an update to COVID-19 protocols.
Going into effect for tonight’s game (June 2, 2021)
Governor Holcomb announced last week new guidance around COVID-19 protocols for the State. Given this new guidance, masks will no longer be required while visiting the Indiana State Fairgrounds and the Indiana Farmers Coliseum for fully vaccinated individuals. If you are not vaccinated, all guests are encouraged to wear a mask and to follow CDC guidelines on whether and when wearing a face covering is warranted.
A LITTLE TOO LATE
Governor Holcomb should have done this PRIOR to the Indy 500, and after seeing the vast majority of race fans defy Mayor Hogsett’s mask mandate, INCLUDING Dr. Caine at one point while NOT eating or drinking, I think it was clear that the people have spoken! Enforce REAL LAWS then get back with us. We’re done.
DEAR JOE, TAKE THIS MASK AND SHOVE IT!
Open everything up already. We’re done with this BS. pic.twitter.com/R0Bm69P6M5
— Ken Avidor (@Avidor) June 2, 2021
That about sums it up pretty well.
Dear Joe, take this mask and shove it!
Indy Fuel join ECHL’s Central Division
The ECHL announced the new divisional alignment for the 2016-17 season, along with a new format for the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Within the new league alignment, the Fuel join the Western Conference’s Central Division, alongside the Fort Wayne Komets, Kalamazoo Wings, Quad City Mallards, Toledo Walleye, Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder.
As approved by the Board of Governors, the Conference and Divisional alignment for the 2016-17 Season will be as follows:
Eastern Conference
North Division:
Adirondack Thunder, Brampton Beast, Elmira Jackals, Manchester Monarchs, Reading Royals, Wheeling Nailers
South Division:
Atlanta Gladiators, Cincinnati Cyclones, Florida Everblades, Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Norfolk Admirals, Orlando Solar Bears, South Carolina Stingrays
Western Conference
Central Division
: Fort Wayne Komets, Indy Fuel, Kalamazoo Wings, Quad City Mallards, Toledo Walleye, Tulsa Oilers, Wichita Thunder
Mountain Division
: Alaska Aces, Allen Americans, Colorado Eagles, Idaho Steelheads, Missouri Mavericks, Rapid City Rush, Utah Grizzlies
With the ECHL’s 2016-17 schedule remaining the same, the Fuel will play a total of 33 of their 72 games within the new-look Central Division. Indy will meet Quad City 10 times (6 home, 4 road), Fort Wayne nine times (5 home, 4 road), Toledo five times (2 home, 3 road), Kalamazoo four times (2 home, 2 road), Tulsa four times (2 home, 2 road) and Wichita once on the road. Twenty-two of Indy’s final 36 games will be against Central opponents.
The first two rounds of the Kelly Cup Playoffs will be played entirely within the division, with the division winner playing the fourth-place finisher and the second-place team meeting the third-place team in the Division Semifinals.
The winners of each series will meet in the Division Finals, leading to the Conference Finals and Kelly Cup Finals. The new format will allow most teams to have a better chance of playing traditional rivals in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and to allow for more economical travel.

Indy Fuel Announce 2016-17 Broadcast Partners
The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, announced Monday their broadcast partners for the upcoming season. The club unveiled a new television broadcast agreement with WTHR-TV, Channel 13, while renewing their radio partnership with CBS Sports 1430 for the third straight season.
During the 2016-17 season, all Friday and Saturday Fuel home games will be aired live on WTHR-TV affiliate COZI TV, while home and road games will be broadcast live on CBS Sports 1430, online at cbssports1430.com and on mobile devices using the free TuneIn radio app. Each and every ECHL game can also be streamed live online via computer and mobile device through ECHL.TV, powered by NeuLion.
“As our organization continues to grow into year three in the ECHL, we look forward to once again give our fans the opportunity to follow the Fuel at every turn this season,” said Fuel CEO Sean Hallett. “We are thrilled to continue our great partnership with CBS Sports 1430 and Entercom Indianapolis, and are extremely excited to join up with WTHR for 2016-17.”
Back on the microphone for all 72 regular season games is Tom Callahan, who will be bringing his NHL-polished call to Indianapolis hockey fans for the second consecutive season. In addition to being the radio “Voice of the Fuel”, television audiences will also get to hear Callahan as his call will be simulcast during WTHR broadcasts.
Joining Callahan in the television booth for 2016-17 is Indy sports icon and award-winning WTHR.com columnist Bob Kravitz. Sideline reporter Talor Whitaker will return for her second season as part of the Fuel television broadcast, which will be produced for the third consecutive year by Indianapolis-based WebStream Sports, a Raycom Media Company.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to do television work for the Fuel,” said Kravitz, who joined the WTHR newsroom in 2014. “Hockey is growing in Central Indiana and I want to be part of that growth.”
COZI TV can be found over-the-air on channel 13.2, on Bright House channel 357, and Comcast channel 250 in the Indianapolis area.

Borg-Warner Trophy and Stanley Cup Meet at Yard of Bricks
Two of the most iconic symbols of victory in sports – the Borg-Warner Trophy and the Stanley Cup – appeared together Thursday night for a photo session on the world famous Yard of Bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Stanley Cup appeared at IMS courtesy of the Indy Fuel, the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
The oldest professional sports trophy in North America, the Stanley Cup is presented annually to the National Hockey League champion. Beginning in 1893, the Stanley Cup became the ultimate prize for various amateur and professional hockey organizations. Since 1910, when the National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup, the trophy has been symbolic of professional hockey supremacy. Beginning in 1926, only NHL teams have competed for the Stanley Cup, which is the only professional sports trophy where the name of every member of the winning team is inscribed.
The most prestigious symbol of excellence in worldwide motorsports, the Borg-Warner Trophy, made its debut in 1936 when it was presented to Indianapolis 500 race winner Louis Meyer.
The Borg-Warner Trophy features the three-dimensional sterling silver image of every Indianapolis 500 winner dating to Ray Harroun in 1911. Among the 101 bas-relief images adorning the Borg-Warner Trophy, all are drivers except for one. In tribute to his rejuvenation of the track and Indianapolis 500 following World War II, a 24-karat gold likeness of late Speedway owner and President Anton “Tony” Hulman was added in 1988.
The Borg-Warner Trophy is on permanent display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

Indy Fuel Introduces Mascot & Unveils Jersey
As the Indiana State Fair kicks off the ‘Year of the Coliseum’ today to celebrate the newly-renovated Fairgrounds landmark, the Coliseum’s new tenants added to the opening day festivities with a special announcement: The Indy Fuel, Central Indiana’s new professional hockey franchise, introduced its mascot and unveiled the team jersey to fans at noon at the Coliseum.
“Nitro,” a red dragon, will make the Coliseum its lair as the Fuel play 36 home games against ECHL foes starting this October. Fans helped name Nitro via social media, and when the beast isn’t guarding the team’s home ice at the Fairgrounds, he will serve as a community ambassador and make public appearances with youth groups, etc.
Team president Sean Hallett welcomed Nitro to the Fuel and also unveiled the official team jersey, available for purchase online at www.IndyFuelHockey.com and at the team store (‘The Garage’) at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Indy Fuel 2014-15 Schedule Released
The Indy Fuel today announced the schedule for the team’s inaugural 2014-15 season; the Fuel will skate against ECHL foes over a 72-game regular season, including 36 home contests at the newly-renovated Fairgrounds Coliseum. The action begins at the Coliseum on Oct. 17 as the Fuel drops the puck against the Fort Wayne Komets, rekindling a long-standing hockey rivalry between the two cities.
The two teams will compete in back-to-back games, following up the opener with a rematch on Oct. 18 at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.
“It’s time for Fuel fans to start circling dates on their calendars,” said Sean Hallett, president of the Fuel franchise. “Coach Hillman and the team will kick off the season with a tough pair of rivalry games. We expect some Komets fans to make the drive down to the Coliseum, and we certainly want to send a group of Fuel fans to support the team on the road the next night.”
The schedule includes eleven games (5 home, 6 away) against the Komets, ten (4 home, 6 away) against other in-state rival Evansville Icemen, and nine matchups against the Fuel’s closest ECHL foe, current Kelly Cup finalist Cincinnati Cyclones (6 home, 3 away).
The first game against the Icemen will be held on Oct. 25 at Evansville, with the home rematch on Halloween, Oct. 31. The Fuel will face the Cyclones for the first time on Nov. 7 at Cincinnati, before welcoming the Cyclones to Indianapolis on Nov. 28.
For its first campaign, the Fuel will skate against 13 opponents in both home and away games. The Fuel’s other ECHL competition includes Kalamazoo, Toledo, Wheeling, Orlando, Florida, Reading, Elmira, Gwinnett, South Carolina and Greenville.
“The ECHL schedule gives fans plenty of opportunities to see the team in action,” added the Fuel’s new head coach, Scott Hillman. “I’m confident we’ll build a roster and a winning culture that will give Indianapolis an exciting, competitive brand of hockey each and every game. We can’t wait to get started.”
The full schedule follows, and fans can also check out IndyFuelHockey.com for a printable PDF. Season tickets are still available for the return of pro hockey to Indianapolis; to place a deposit on Fuel season tickets, visit IndyFuelHockey.com/tickets.
